Benefits of light technical boxing sparring, sparring in boxing is one of the most used factors to get a boxer fit for any type of boxing bout whether a professional boxing bout, an amateur boxing bout or even a white collar boxing bout.
Sparring however can mean more than one thing for example you could spar just specific parts of boxing for example a few different types of sparring we use a lot at Apollo’s Boxing in Bolton are –
Jab sparring – In a jab spar both boxers are limited to just using their jab, the aim of this type of spar is to force the boxer to practise not just the many uses of the jab but also defending against the jab which is something that is massively under rated in boxing. The saying goes “The jab can take you round the world” but a good jab defence can take away your opponents ticket for that journey!
Body Sparring – Body sparring is a type of spar where both boxers can use any shot to their training partners body, this type of sparring reinforces a very important but very under used part of boxing which is attacking the body! “Kill the body and the head will fall”
Attack and defence sparring – This type of sparring is when one boxer is attacking using any shot and their training partner typically just has to defend or has just the jab to use in a defensive way, this type of spar not only works one boxers defence but also allows the attacking boxer to work on ways of intelligently breaking down his partners defence. Defence is something that in combat sports is sometimes over looked but every great boxer from Mike Tyson to Flloyd Mayweather has an outstanding defence. As the saying goes “Attack wins matches but defence wins championships”
All of the above mentioned different ways of sparring supplement a full spar where both boxers can throw any shot at the opponent, this type of sparring is usually called “open sparring” the problem with this type of sparring is that is not typically a good idea to do this every day as it usually ends up similar to actually having a fight.
Open sparring is by no means wrong, it is very necessary at the beginning of a boxers career to get used to feeling what it’s like to be in an actual boxing bout however once you get used to feeling what it’s like to get hit in the head Apollo’s Boxing doesn’t feel like you need reminding every day what it’s like to take a shot to the head and over time your punch resistance is broken down so basically the more hard shots you take in training the less you can take in actual boxing bouts, this is where technical sparring comes into play.
Where as it wouldn’t be a great idea to hard spar every day at Apollo’s Boxing we believe you could technique spar every day if you wanted!
As with all training programmes everyone is different and some boxers both amateur boxers and professional boxers will like to spar hard regular however at Apollo’s Boxing we like to use a variety of sparring techniques mentioned above so that rather than open sparring all the time we can work specific areas our boxers need to improve in.
At Apollo’s Boxing we like to take a more scientific approach to boxing and like out students to not only learn how to cause damage but also how to not take any damage along the way, basically we teach our boxers how to be intelligently violent.
