Apollo’s Boxing training tips – the uppercut! There has been some sensational knockouts recently in professional boxing bouts featuring both Povetkin and Gervonta Davies, both winning by knockout and both landing a perfect uppercut!

The uppercut itself can be a very hard shot to land in sparring or in a boxing bout but is without doubt one of the most concussive and dangerous punches in boxing if set up and timed correctly.

As with all moves and punches in boxing the set up and timing of the move or punch is more important than the actual punch! No matter how good the punch is if it’s not set up correctly or timed right then it won’t land!

The actually technique needed to perform and an uppercut basically has three parts –

Getting off the centre line – Getting off the centre line basically means you are not directly in front of your opponent, you can do with by putting your weight more on one of your legs and leaning to that side or by stepping your feet to one side or the other of your opponent!

Dropping your weight down to bring it back up – The uppercut by its nature is designed to come up so obviously our weight needs to go down so that we can bring it up! Two ways we can do this as mentioned above is either to drop our weight down onto one leg or to step our feet to either side of our opponent. This not only puts you in a safer position but also powers up the uppercut which can be seen in both the Povetkin and the Davies knockouts in this article.

Face your palm towards your body and bring the shot vertically up – As we say at Apollo’s Boxing and fitness in Bolton there is no way that is always right and no way that is always wrong but the higher percentage way of throwing the uppercut is to face your palm towards yourself and to bring the punch vertically up through your opponents guard. There are several other ways of throwing this shot but this is the way we teach our amateur boxers down at Apollo’s Boxing.

The uppercut is an advanced punch to throw in boxing which can bring big rewards if you land it but if you miss can leave big openings so just like investing money the more you put in the more you can lose but if you set it up right and time it right then the more you get back!
