Apollos Boxing tips – Head Movement, there are three basic ways of defending yourself in a boxing match whether it be amateur boxing, professional boxing or white collar boxing in this article we are going to go breakdown one of the three ways you can defend yourself in a boxing match or boxing sparring.

At Apollos Boxing in Bolton we believe in coaching the science of the violence in a boxing match, head movement is used by not only some brilliant defensive boxers but also some great aggressive fighters, without a good defense and good technique you cannot apply any type of strategy for example being aggressive without good boxing technique. Head movement in boxing is a great way of applying an aggressive boxing style.

There are several benefits of head movement in boxing below we will highlight three of them –

Allowing you to stay in the same position while defending yourself – The other two types of defenses using your hands to block or parry shots away or using your feet to move yourself either away from the attack or out of range both either move you out of position or move your hands out of position, with head movement your feet are in the same position as when you defending so you can easily counter back, moving your head and not using your hands also means both hands are locked and loaded ready to attack.

Getting your head on the punching line – Moving your head in the easiest way to get your head off the punching line, if you move your feet this does get your head out of the firing line but also changes the position in the ring where you may possibly miss the opportunity to fire your counter punches.

To set up power punches – When you slip or roll in a boxing match it puts your weight onto one side of your body for example if you slip to your left it puts your weight onto your left side, if you wanted to throw a hard shot with your left hand you really need your weight on the left side of your body. Think about Mike Tyson slipping and throwing that brutal left hook!

As always there is more than one way to do everything and above we have explained three reasons to move your head in a boxing match we like to encourage all our boxers and keep fit students to expand every use for every boxing technique that we teach at Apollos Boxing.
