Apollos Boxing tips – feinting, feinting is a massive part of all martial arts and is used to not only set up attacks but also to disturb your opponents attacks and even give you time to set yourself or to give yourself space.
Feinting is basically showing your opponent part of a boxing move without completing the full move, for example half throwing your jab out there or even just moving your left hand to simulate actually throwing the jab.
There are several purpose’s of a feint in a boxing match, as with every move in a boxing match, an MMA fight or just any game of strategy it is always for a reason. At Apollos Boxing in Bolton we like to explain to all of our boxers the reason for each movement, even to the boxers who just use boxing as a way to get fit or to lose weight.
Below are some of the reasons for feinting –
To guess your opponents next move – When your opponent is thinking if you feint you will usually get your opponent to expose his intentions, for example if your opponent was thinking of throwing a left hook the feint will usually expose this and get your opponent to throw the left hook therefore showing his cards so to speak!
To counter your opponent – A feint will sometimes draw an attack from your opponent as they think you are leading with a punch and hopefully will get them to over extend or to fall in, any time your opponent falls in it is a great time to catch your opponent with your real attack.
To disguise your real attack – By feinting one attack you can distract your opponent to the actual attack, this technique can be used in many ways but one of the basic ways in a boxing match is to feint an attack to the body and to launch the real attack to the head.
There are a lot more reasons to use feinting than the ones explained above but as with all boxing lessons at Apollos Boxing we like to keep it simple and at the most teach three variations of a technique and how to apply the technique.
If you are competing in any martial arts for example an amateur, professional or white collar boxing match or an amateur or professional MMA fight you will understand that it is a game of strategy and not just a match of brute strength and force, while trying to figure out your opponents next move whilst disguising your own. You will of heard that boxing is like a game of chess well that saying is very true and feinting allows you to not only to see your opponents next move but also to draw out that move and enable you to counter this exposed attack.
As with all boxing techniques and any techniques in any martial arts in general there are many ways to apply these techniques, some we are very big on at Apollos Boxing is the allow and encourage our boxers to develop each boxing technique and boxing fundamental in as many ways as possible!
At Apollos Boxing in Bolton we like to educate our boxers in all areas from boxing technique to boxing related fitness and also the mental aspect of competing in a boxing match or an MMA fight, we coach amateur boxers, professional boxers, amateur MMA fighters and professional MMA fighters and even teach boxing to our students who just come to the boxing gym as way to get fit and to lose weight and would say that all of the boxers not only understand the boxing techniques mentioned but also expand the techniques themselves adding their own bit of flair!
