Apollo’s Boxing tips – how to improve punch power, punch power is something that is often talked about and the question on how to improve punch power is something that 99% of all boxers have asked at some point.
At Apollo’s Boxing in Bolton we don’t just concentrate on one aspect of boxing training for example punching power but try to develop all our boxers equally with speed, technique and power. All of these aspects benefit each other but we do however have a few different ways we develop power for that knockout punch!
Below we will explain how to develop punch power and hopefully help you deliver those knockout punches! Here are three ways to help you develop power into your punches!
Technique work – Before you develop any extra power into your punches you need to make sure you are throwing the punches correct and understand correctly how to apply the techniques, the most you get used to not only throwing the shots correctly but also setting up your punches the more damage they will cause when they land! If the shot is technically correct and accurate it will cause damage, no matter how hard the punch is if it misses it causes no damage, just the same in any sport accuracy comes first – for example it doesn’t matter how hard you kick a ball in football if it misses the target it’s not a goal!
Heavy bag work and power shield – As mentioned above technique is the most important way to score a knockout, after you have developed your technique you need to able to practise throwing a hard shot, heavy bags and the boxing power shield are perfect to practise on rather than your sparring partner you the boxing pads! The heavy bag or boxing shield give enough resistance to active and build all the correct muscles to develop that knockout punch!
plyometrics – Plyometrics are a massive part of boxing, a lot of the movements in boxing rely on a fast change of direction for example slipping and throwing a left hook. The majority of body weight exercises we use while training our boxers are plyometric exercises like burpee and jump, class press ups, squat jumps and medicine ball slams. All of these exercises should be performed in an explosive manner just the same way as a punch is thrown! These will help develop power in the movements that are used while throwing punches and are using the specific muscles used while throwing an explosive punch! If you wanted to take up a weight program including a plyometric exercise program you should always consult a qualified instructor.
All of the three methods are ways of improving your punch power but knockout power does seem to be something that some people are born with and some people aren’t, however the power can be developed over time and built up and with the correct training in both boxing technique and boxing related strength and power work!
In all combat sports there is usually the option to win on points or to knockout your opponent out, we like to teach our boxers whether there amateur, white collar or professional boxers and even the amateur and professional MMA fighters than train with us how to not just our box there opponents but also how to knock their opponent out!
These types of training methods not only develop punching power but also are physically tasking so even if you are boxing just as a way to get fit or to lose weight they are very effective just for that reason!
