What are the fundamentals of boxing at Apollo’s Boxing, at Apollo’s Boxing we like to not just teach our boxers boxing moves like how to throw the punches or throw combinations but to explain fundamentals to them.

Fundamentals in boxing are something that apply to every move in a boxing match or a boxing spar for example if you are throwing the jab or a left hook then you need good fundamentals to not only land this shot but also to make sure you do not get hit back!

The fundamentals we teach in both our advanced boxing classes and our boxing fundamentals at Apollo’s Boxing are –

Distance – This is basically the space in between you and your opponent, a good boxer will control this space and either not allow you to get close to them or allow you to enter your opponents range whenever you want! This is a massive part of our training in all of our boxing classes and boxing one to ones and it basically allows you to choose where or when the fights takes place!

Positioning – Positioning is having a better position in the ring than your opponent and is a massive part of hitting and not getting hit, experts of this are boxers like Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather. Positioning could also be called an angle and could also be classed as ring craft as it allows you to dictate where you and your opponent go in the boxing ring, again this is a massive part of our training in both our advanced boxing classes and our fundamental boxing classes!

Timing – Timing is when your perform either a defence or an attack at the right time, all boxers have some sort of pattern or combination of moves that can be times if you can read them, an example of this is that if a boxer keeps throwing the same shots over and over then you can time there attack with your counter! Timing is another massive fundamental that is constantly being explaining in both our advanced boxing classes and our fundamental boxing classes at Apollo’s Boxing. Timing is a essential parts of all sports and without timing your moves you yourself would be countered!

Set ups – Setting up your moves in boxing basically allows you to apply that move without your opponent being able to see the move coming, we say ‘move’ rather than ‘punch’ because even your defences need to be set up or varied so that as mentioned above you cannot be timed off your opponent. A basic description of a set up in boxing would be to make your opponent believe one thing is happening and then something else happens for example you feint your jab and throw the left hook or you feint to move right but move left. Sounds very basic but a lot of boxers have a set pattern or set combinations that can be easily figured out whereas if you understand what a set up is in boxing you can create your own set ups! As the famous boxing saying goes “it’s the shots you don’t see that knock you out” In both the advanced boxing class and the fundamentals boxing classes and even our boxing one to ones we fully explain the ideas behind setting your moves up!

Tempo or rhythm – Tempo and rhythm can be used to make your opponent or sparring partner believe they know the speed you are going to attack them with and then you change this to throw off there timing. Basically you go slow to make them think your going slow and then you move fast or the other way round. This again applies to all ‘moves’ in boxing and at Apollo’s Boxing in Bolton we like to educate our boxers on the intelligent aspect of the sport and give our boxers an advantage over their opponents. This fundamental again is talked about in both the advanced boxing classes and the basic boxing classes and also the boxing one to ones we coach at Apollo’s Boxing.

This might seem like a lot of information however these fundamentals apply to every boxing move that can be taught from the jab to catching the jab you need these fundamentals to apply all of those moves.

At our fundamentals boxing classes and our advanced boxing classes at Apollo’s Boxing in Bolton we strongly emphasise on the fundamentals and not long combinations of punches and defences that will never be repeated in a boxing match or a spar, this means that you actually have less information to remember and more freedom to create your own combinations of moves!
