The importance of repetition in boxing training, repetition in boxing or anything else at all you want to be good at is one of the most important parts of training!
At Apollo’s Boxing in Bolton we emphasise repeating movements over and over as much as possible in each boxing class and in our boxing one to ones!
Repetition is important for combat sports such as boxing because in a boxing match you don’t have time to think about a move in the heat of the moment it has to be automatic and almost a sub conscious decision.
There is research that proves this process with most experts on creating habits and becoming an expert on any subject agreeing the “ten thousand hour rule” which basically means ten thousand hours doing something with make you a master at whatever you have put that time into!
Although this seems a long time there will be massive improvements along the way so it isn’t like you won’t get better or improve until you hit ten thousand hours that is just the number for mastery!
With this in mind you cannot just go through the motions and not really concentrate, the ten thousand hours needs to be conscious focused practise!
When you see a boxer such as Floyd Mayweather or Canelo Alvarez they have practised specific moves for thousands of hours so when you see them perform a certain defence or a sharp you hear the commentator a lot of the time say “what great natural reflexes” but it’s not a natural reflex it’s the benefit of training a certain move thousands and thousands of times over!
As mentioned before the repetitions need to be focused repetitions where you think about the movement being performed, in each boxing class or boxing one to one we like to remind our boxers of this throughout each lesson and as mentioned in our previous article shadow boxing is a great way of chipping away at the ten thousand hours of practise because you can shadow box anywhere and not just in the boxing classes or boxing one to ones!
At Apollo’s Boxing we structure all of our boxing classes and one to ones in four week training blocks and are always developing and repping our our boxers techniques to ensure we are heading towards the goal of the moves being automatic or subconscious so in the heat of a boxing bout or a heavy spar you can pull off that move even when your tired or have been caught with a good shot!
If you want to give one of our boxing classes or boxing one to ones a try then contact now for prices and to get booked in and we can get working toward hitting that ten thousand hours!
