How to feint in boxing – Apollo’s Boxing Tips, in our boxing classes and our boxing one to ones at Apollo’s Boxing we like to educate our boxers in all areas of technique and improve their boxing intelligence!
We like to teach our boxers how to outsmart their opponents rather than using speed or strength and one of the main ways of outsmarting your opponent in a boxing match or boxing sparring is to feint your opponent into believing one thing is going to happen but changing the outcome!
Boxing is a game of strategy and like all games of strategy it is based on deception, feinting is basically just telling your opponent a lie for example you feint your left hook but instead throw the right straight!
You could feint anything in boxing from a punch you are throwing to a direction your going to move in and even the speed your going to move at!
Below we have listed three of the main advantages and reasons for feinting –
To see your opponents next move – When we feint at our opponent we can see what our opponent is expecting and how they are going to deal with whatever you might of feinted, for example if you feint the jab and your opponent keeps slipping their head to the left you can time this and let them move into your left hook or right straight! By feinting in this way you are basically seeing what your opponent is thinking so it’s like a look inside your opponents mind!
To draw your opponents attack – When you feint at your opponent you are looking to get a reaction from your opponent and one reaction you could get is that they throw wrongly anticipate that your attacking and throw a miss timed counter leaving themselves open for your next shot! This type of feint is like throwing some bait down and waiting for your prey to bite and fall into your trap!
To disrupt your opponents timing – Timing and rhythm in boxing are massively important, if your opponent is able to read when you are going to attack then it would be easy for them to anticipate when to defend and counter your attack! Feinting doesn’t allow your opponent to get an accurate reading as we mentioned above feinting is like telling a lie so if you keep acting like your going to attack and lying to them then eventually they will stop believing you and then will not be able to anticipate your attack! This is basically like having a race but you being in charge of when you shout go! You know when your going to start the race but your opponent doesn’t!
As you can see there are many good reasons to feint in boxing and in all our boxing classes and boxing one to ones at Apollo’s Boxing we try to re enforce these ideas in every boxing session!
