Breakdown of a boxing lesson down at Apollos Boxing in Bolton, at Apollos Boxing we pride ourselves in getting as much boxing technique into the boxing lesson as possible, we warm up with specific boxing drills either in a partner or with your boxing coach then onto some boxing pad work or boxing partner drills and we always finish with either some boxing technique sparring or some boxing specific conditioning.

Obviously everyone uses boxing training for a different reason a lot of Apollos Boxing students come to the gym to use boxing as a way to keep fit or to lose weight for the students coming to Apollos Boxing for these reasons we still stick to a similar format whether the student is experienced in boxing training or a beginner.

We also train some high level amateur boxers, some professional boxers, amateur MMA fighters and professional MMA fighters and the same format is followed for these boxers and MMA fighters, the idea behind this format is that each student gets as much boxing practice into each one hour session.

We definitely don’t mean pack as many different boxing techniques into one hour as possible therefore confusing the student, what we try to achieve at Apollos Boxing is the same ideas and fundamentals repeated many times in the same hour without it being repetitive and becoming boring where the student switches off and struggles to concentrate.

A Boxing lesson from start to finish looks something like this –

Warm up – 10 minutes – Some basic boxing drills for example footwork drills and basic punching mechanics, these boxing drills we change every four to six weeks and every student as a rule will do these same boxing drills whether they are brand new to boxing or are an experienced boxer or MMA fighter the drills are used to re enforce boxing technique and to warm up the specific muscle groups.

Technique drills – 30 minutes – If this is a group boxing session or more than one person in a private boxing session then we will work some drills usually based on an effective boxing defense and there partner breaking down this defense with an intelligent attack. The idea of these drills is to see how a certain attack would break down a certain defense or how a certain boxing style would work against another boxing style.

Live Boxing drilling/sparring – 15 minutes – This part of the lesson is where we try to implement the boxing techniques that have been taught throughout the lesson through some technique boxing sparring usually to the body unless it is light technique to the head or specific boxing drills where hard shots to the head are limited.

Flexibility – 5 minutes – At Apollos Boxing we try to ensure we keep our boxers flexible not just to avoid injuries but also to give our boxers the flexibility to not only perform the boxing techniques but also to be able to perform them with speed and power, throughout each boxing session we perform flexibility exercises in their rest periods.

The above breakdown of a boxing lesson might seem very vague but we teach a variety of different boxing techniques which we change each week, every week we pick a boxing technique to work on and try to improve each boxers technique gradually.

Apollos Boxing will soon be adding more videos to our own you tube channel where it will be much easier to explain and demonstrate on video what we do down at Apollos Boxing in Bolton!
