Apollos Boxing in Bolton’s amateur boxing team out sparring all over the northwest! At Apollos Boxing in Bolton, we are building our own homegrown amateur boxing gym!

Our idea as a gym is to get as many focused training hours as possible into our boxers without overtraining them or risking injuring them!

With this idea in mind, we try to limit hard damaging sparring as much as possible therefore we have waited until our boxer’s defenses have been up to standard before sending them out sparring at other local boxing gyms in the area!

Sparring at other amateur boxing gyms is as close to an actual boxing bout as the real thing as both boxers don’t know each other and it usually sparred in the same duration of rounds as an actual bout of boxing which is 3 x 2-minute rounds for more novice boxers and 3 x 3-minute rounds for more experienced boxers.

At Apollos Boxing in Bolton, every session finishes with some sort of sparring which could be either attack and defense drills where one boxer attacks the defending boxer, a body spar where both boxers can only throw to the body, or a jab spar where both boxers can only use the jab!

Every session at Apollos Boxing in Bolton does include some sort of sparring however you cannot replicate the type of intensity that sparring at other boxing gyms provides!

Boxing training should try to replicate the event that you are taking part in and this includes several factors which we try to implicate here at Apollos Boxing in Bolton.

Below there are some of the factors we try and replicate in our sparring sessions at Apollos Boxing and at other boxing gyms where we spar at –

  1. Sparring someone you are not familiar with – If you spar with the same opponent over and over you begin to know each other’s techniques and start to become comfortable with each other, whereas at another boxing you don’t know the person and usually don’t see them until your in the boxing ring just like an actual boxing bout!
  2. Training under fatigue – Sparring in your boxing gym is often more controlled so you do not really reach the point of fatigue, at other boxing gyms you will often be pushed harder and therefore have to think under fatigue just like in an actual boxing match.
  3. Sparring with a crowd watching – Everyone knows the feeling of pressure when people are watching you do anything, just like being back in school reading out some lines in a school play with all your schoolmates watching! At other boxing gyms, the other coaches and other boxers’ training partners are usually there to watch the spar which gets you used to people watching as you box!

All of these different factors are something that has to be thought about in preparation for a fight, at Apollos Boxing although we are a new club we have years of boxing coaching experience and we are using these to come up with our training methods and philosophy to get our boxers ready to not only compete but to dominate our opponents!
