Apollo’s Boxing – The different styles of boxing, in boxing there are several different styles end this is what makes boxing so exciting as the saying goes styles makes fights!
At Apollo’s Boxing we try not to push our students into a specific boxing style in our boxing classes or boxing one to ones but rather let them develop there own boxing style, like with our personalities our boxing style is individual to us!
The main types of boxing styles are –
The back foot boxer – The boxer is typically a a boxer who uses his jab more and boxes on the back foot working the outside of the boxing ring, trying to use distance and a good jab to score from the outside and drawing the opposing boxer into a counter punch when they over commit and try to close the distance. Boxers famous for this style are Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard.
The pressure fighter – Boxers who are the more come forward type boxers are not necessary aggressive in there attitude the term pressure is more just of a way of describing the way the boxers moves forward to attack there opponent forcing there opponent to either back up to the ropes, engage in a high work rate fight or to use there footwork to escape the pressure. This style of boxing usually requires a lot of fitness and forces the opponent to tire out and to make mistakes which will lead into counter punching opportunities for the pressure fighter. Boxers famous for this style of boxing are Mike Tyson, George Foreman and Joe Frazier.
There are a lot of deferent ways these styles can be interpreted but basically in a boxing match you can be the boxer going forward or the boxer on the back foot, usually this is how most boxing matches go.
At Apollo’s Boxing in Bolton we like to simplify the way we teach rather than make it more complicated. You could break the styles mentioned above into several more styles like “the brawler” “the counter puncher” or even by the way the boxer stands “The Southpaw” but basically all these variations fall into the categories mentioned above, you can either box on the back foot or box going forward and then you can use the smaller details to improve these styles.
For example if you preferred to box on the back foot you could be a counter puncher or a southpaw as well as if you were a pressure fighter, when you get two come pressure fighters that usually ends up with a very high action crowd please style when you have two pure boxers this can usually lead to a slower pace fight and even a stalemate.
In our classes at Apollo’s Boxing we like to teach our boxers how to box in as many different ways as possible as we believe there is no right way to win a boxing match or no one style that always works against everyone.
We encourage our boxers in our boxing classes and boxing one to ones to find there own style and to incorporate as many different techniques and styles as they feel suit their own boxing style, as the saying goes styles makes fights so if you can box in different boxing styles then you have an advantage over several different styles.
Basically whatever style works for you and against your opponent is the right style and both a pressure fighter and a pure boxers could be a counter punched or a southpaw.
The goal in our boxing classes and one to one boxing classes at Apollo’s Boxing is to make our boxers as versatile as possible and to let our boxers develop their own boxing style with our guidance along the way!
