Apollo’s Boxing tips – Creating angles, at Apollo’s Boxing in Bolton we always try to teach our boxers and MMA fighters as many boxing skills as possible.

One of the techniques or strategies we like to teach our boxers at Apollo’s Boxing is to get an angle on their opponent.

The best boxers in the world will create and take advantage of angles, boxers such as Mike Tyson, Vasyl Lomachenko, Errol Spence and older boxers such as sugar Ray Robinson used angles successfully to defeat their opponent through there professional boxing careers.

An angle is basically an advantage over your opponent, if you are at an angle from your opponent in any type of fight such as Boxing, Thai Boxing, MMA or even a fight outside your local pub then you have an advantage over your opponent.

There are several ways of creating and gaining an angle in boxing and below we will highlight three ways we teach our boxers to get this angle in a boxing match or MMA fight.

Punching your way to an angle – You can use some light punches to blind or distract your opponent whilst moving your feet off your opponents punching line, Lomachenko is one of the best at using this boxing technique.

Using head movement – Head movement and just defence in general is a great way to secure an angle against your opponent, while your opponent is throwing punches they are usually not moving their feet which gives you the opportunity to move your feet to angle from your opponent – Mike Tyson used his head movement to great effect to gain an angle and to attack his opponent from a safe position.

Switching stance – Switching your stance can be used in many ways and this is something that we teach all of our boxers down at Apollo’s Boxing in Bolton. To use switching your stance to get an angle you basically take your back foot and step it forward outside your opponents foot, this technique is another great way to get your angle. One of the best boxers to use this technique was Marvin Hagler who used this technique not in the fancy way usually associated with switching stances but more of a way to cause damage.

As you can see from above there are more than one way to get an angle, however you get the angle doesn’t really matter as long as you get there.

It is always good to have more than one way of using any technique or strategy so that if one way doesn’t work you can try another, it’s just like having more than one tool in your tool box if one tool doesn’t work you can try another.
